Tesla Model Y L novated lease: price, 6-seat layout, child restraints and FBT
The Australian Tesla Model Y L is a six-seat (2+2+2) EV listed at $74,900 before on-roads. What that means for child seats, the EV FBT exemption and the 2027 changes on a novated lease.
Quick facts (Australia)
- Seats: six, in a 2+2+2 layout — two front seats, two second-row captain's chairs, a two-seat third row. It is not a seven-seater.
- Variant: one — Premium Long Range AWD.
- List price at launch: $74,900 before on-road costs. Check Tesla's site for the current price; Tesla changes prices without notice.
- Range: 681 km (WLTP, claimed).
- Vehicle-to-load (V2L): yes.
- EV FBT exemption today: yes, if the car's value is under the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles ($91,661 for 2026–27).
- From 1 April 2027: the proposed $75,000 cut-off matters for this car. See the FBT section below.
Can a Model Y L fit three child seats?
Not three across the second row. The second row is two individual captain's chairs, so there is no middle seat there.
The bigger question is which seats a child restraint can go in. In June 2026 two major restraint brands, Infasecure and Maxi-Cosi, said their restraints should not be used in the second-row captain's chairs. Their concern is that the top tether can slip down the side of the seatback. Britax said it was still working with Tesla on whether V-tethers or split tethers solve this. Tesla has demonstrated installations it says work, some needing a tether extension. ANCAP's assessment also noted difficulties installing child restraints in the second row.
All three brands said the third-row bench suits single- and split-tether seats.
What to do before you commit to a lease:
1. Check your specific restraint's manual and the manufacturer's current advice for the Model Y L. Advice was still changing at the time of writing.
2. Have the installation checked by a qualified restraint fitter. Kidsafe Queensland offers Model Y L fittings.
3. If you need three restraints, test the actual seats in the actual car first.
This is general information, not child-safety advice, and it does not replace the restraint manufacturer's instructions.
Does the Model Y L qualify for the EV FBT exemption?
Today: yes, if it is under the threshold. A battery electric car is exempt from FBT on a novated lease when its value is below the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles. For 2026–27 that threshold is $91,661. The value used is broadly the GST-inclusive price, including options and dealer delivery, but not rego or stamp duty. A $74,900 list price leaves room for options before reaching it. The figure on your quote is the one that counts.
From 1 April 2027: the $75,000 line matters. The 2026 Budget announced that from 1 April 2027 the full exemption applies only to eligible EVs costing up to $75,000. EVs above $75,000 but under the luxury car tax threshold would get a 25% FBT discount rather than a full exemption, and the full exemption ends altogether from 1 April 2029. The Government has said existing arrangements will not be affected.
The Model Y L's $74,900 list price sits just under $75,000. Once options and delivery are added, the value used for the test could be over it. Which value the test uses, and exactly how existing arrangements are protected, depends on the legislation. The ATO describes the measure as not yet law. If you are close to the line, it matters when your lease starts and how the car is specified. We check this on every quote.

What to compare on a Model Y L novated lease quote
On a $75,000 car, a small rate difference becomes thousands of dollars over the term. Ask every provider for:
- the amount financed, and what is in it beyond the car;
- the finance rate (nominal p.a.) and any brokerage, commission or establishment fees;
- the residual, and whether it is quoted including or excluding GST;
- the management fee and the running-cost budgets, shown separately from the finance;
- the change to your take-home pay per pay cycle.

Common questions
Is the Tesla Model Y L a seven-seater?
No. The Australian Model Y L has six seats in a 2+2+2 layout: two front seats, two second-row captain's chairs and a two-seat third row.
How much is the Tesla Model Y L in Australia?
It launched at $74,900 before on-road costs, in a single Premium Long Range AWD variant. Tesla changes prices without notice, so check the current price on Tesla's site.
Can I fit three child seats in a Model Y L?
Not three across the second row, which is two captain's chairs. Some restraint brands have advised against using the second-row captain's chairs at all because of top-tether slippage. All three major brands said the third-row bench suits single- and split-tether seats. Check your restraint manufacturer's current advice and have it fitted by a qualified fitter.
Is the Model Y L FBT-exempt on a novated lease?
Today, yes, provided its value is under the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles ($91,661 for 2026–27). From 1 April 2027 the Government has announced the full exemption will apply only to EVs costing up to $75,000. The Model Y L's $74,900 list price sits just under that, but options and delivery may take it over. The measure is not yet law.
Does the Model Y L have vehicle-to-load (V2L)?
Yes. V2L lets you power appliances from the car's battery. It doesn't change the lease structure or the FBT treatment.
